When it comes to funny in Denver, Comedy Works is the staple! The downtown location is a favorite of professional comedians. Comedians like Joe Rogan, Tom Segura, and many others have lamented over the years the joy of coming to Denver to work at the legendary club. Since 1981, the club in Larimer Square has been a launching pad for rising stars and a stage for legendary comedians.
One great perk to working at the club is the accommodations provided by the club itself, particularly for young stand-ups. Before comics become headliners on the marquee at clubs, they are often set up in small, cheap hotel rooms; that is if they are given any place to stay. Wende Curtis, the club’s sole owner, has purchased two condos (one at each location) to provide a place for performers to stay while on the road. At the downtown condo, a Mullet Hall of Fame is decorated with paintings of balloon animals, a faux zebra rug, and a Bozo the Clown punching bag. A talking Rodney Dangerfield doll sits on a counter next to a lava lamp. There is also an entire wall is filled with paintings and other artwork done by visiting comedians.
“When people ask me what the best comedy club in the country is, I always say Comedy Works Denver,” says Las Vegas–based comedian Brian Regan, who has performed at the Kennedy Center and Radio City Music Hall. “I’ve always felt that way. There are a lot of great clubs out there, but the planets just line up when it comes to Comedy Works.”
From hosting Dave Chappelle's surprise shows in 2022 to taking a stand against controversy by refusing Louis C.K.'s comeback tour, Comedy Works has always been a place where comedy takes center stage. Legendary records, like Dave Attell’s “Skanks for the Memories” were recorded there because of the club’s atmosphere and crowds.
Performers aren’t the only ones who enjoy the venue, audiences are very fond of the space, the bar, and the service. There is a wide array of weekly events to check out, notably every Tuesday’s “New Talent Night.”
Whether you're looking for current events with a comedic twist in "Today's Topics with John Novosad or classic stand-up, Comedy Works has something to tickle everyone's funny bone. Check out the location downtown or at the Landmark in Greenwood Village.
